Levar Burton, Apiarist (or, How Reading Rainbow Continues to Shape My Life)

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to keep bees. I blame you, Levar Burton, I blame you.

I really was an obsessive fan of “Reading Rainbow,” and this episode has been living in my subconcious for over 20 years. For some reason, it erupted to the surface of my thoughts in late winter; and after minimal research, I found course in beekeeping at the local ag center. For $10 and three nights plus one Saturday, I could finally answer the question of whether or not I could feasibly keep bees. The answer: Yes.

I’m glad I didn’t follow my other PBS-inspired, childhood fascination to fruition. Working in a crayon factory really wouldn’t suit me.
